IC: Mundane (By Daylight)
Name: Kalvin Brnine
Canon: Friends at the Table
Age: 30
Appearance: A fat person with olive skin, lots of piercings, and kind of maroon-coloured hair that they wear in a mullet/shag cut. Given the choice, they will always wear overalls.
Background Questions:
1) What does your character do by daylight? Brnine is the shop teacher at the Everwave Academy for Distinguished Youth. They live alone in an old walk-up apartment in a historically industrial part of the city.
2) What are they fighting for? Their motivation stems not from some deep-rooted sense of the justice of the fight but from the fact that several of their teenage students are Nova Knights. Yes, it's good to save the world and so on, but mostly, somebody's got to keep an eye on the kids.
3) Who matters most to them? Brnine's a loner; they don't have many important people in their life. They're estranged from their family and don't really have friends. Their closest relationship is probably with the weird old lady in the apartent upstairs whose name they don't know but who asks them to feed her fish for her sometimes.
4) How did they get to now? They grew up in a military family elsewhere in Atlace (outside of Chalra City) and went through the motions, including completing military training after they graduated high school. However, before they could get stationed anywhere, they defected and left for Chalra City, where they changed their name to Kalvin Brnine to avoid being found by people from their past. Chalra City isn't a cheap place to live, though, and they had no grand plans for what to do next. They've always liked working with their hands and making things, so they eventually landed a job at the Everwave Academy as the shop teacher. Now, they go to work, receive their salary, pay their rent, and try to keep busy in their downtime with various hobbies.
Personality Questions:
1) What would make your character happiest or fulfilled? If you asked Brnine this question, they would either change the subject or leave. They have no idea what would make them feel happy or fulfilled; that's not on their radar. In truth, though, making human connections (like friendships) and having actual ties to a place (like, say, Chalra City) would go a long way to making them happier.
2) What does your character fear the most? They most fear having to go back to their life as it was before they moved to Chalra City: following orders, keeping to a chain of command, and training to kill people for a living. They try to keep a low profile to prevent anyone from their past from finding out where they are now. As a result, there are two major ways in which they're vulnerable: 1) if their civilian identity was ever publicly tied to their identity as Nova Coral, people from their past might find them, and 2) being a Nova Knight, while very different from being in the military, does have just enough similarities that there's a small risk they might freeze or falter at a crucial moment.
3) What does your character think their greatest strength is? What is their actual greatest strength? Brnine thinks their greatest strength is their adaptability; they're good at processing new info, including weird stuff, on the fly and adjusting accordingly. Their actual greatest strength is that they're a stalwart source of support for their comrades. They may be bad at inspirational speeches and awkward to talk to (and I mean very awkward to talk to), but in all other ways, they're there to bolster and back up the other Nova Knights, both in combat and out of it.
IC: Supernova (By Starlight)
Code Name: Nova Coral
Appearance: Teal and white outfit with reddish accents. Overall shorts but make it magical girl. Pauldrons and matching flowy cape. Hair in two very long French braids. Relatively sensible lace-up boots (I mean, sensible within the scope of magical girl footwear). Importantly, they also have a DBZ-style scouter over their left eye.
Signature Colors: Dark Teal (#598484) & Brick Red (#BF6762)
Domain: Coral Reef
Combat Type: Defend
Starting Power: Stone Shelter - A wall made of stony corals bursts from the ground to shield one or more of their allies.
Weapon: No weapon! At least not for now.
Awakening: Brnine's awakening happened on the Everwave Academy's campus, with Mutsumi. They spotted Mutsumi carrying some garden equipment near the school garden and not looking where she was going. Mutsumi tripped and Brnine caught her arm to keep her and the equipment from going flying, and they both got slammed with their past lives' dying wishes. As a result, Mutsumi knows Brnine's identity as a Nova Knight (and Brnine knows Mutsumi's).
Past Life Questions:
1) What was their past life’s role on The Nashira? What kind of life did they lead on Hassaleh before their exodus?
On Hassaleh, Brnine was a lower-class Aster who (mostly) made a living as an artisan and engineer. Their primary source of income was selling the things they created, but for the right price, they could also be hired for odd jobs needing an engineer or mechanic. They lived near a pack of local kids, mostly orphans, who were always up to no good, and while Brnine's other neighbours were always complaining about the kids causing problems for them, Brnine stayed on good terms with the kids by staying resolutely out of their business. Overall, Brnine was accountable to no one but themself and liked it that way...right up until they met Valence, a friendly scholar who was unfazed by Brnine's acerbic personality and had a disarming earnestness about them.
Brnine and Valence grew closer after a noble hired them to work on a few jobs together - the noble fancied himself an inventor; he wanted Brnine's help with the technical aspects of his work and Valence's knowledge of artistic theory - so when Valence started expressing suspicion about the alien envoys who presented themselves as ambassadors, Brnine didn't dismiss them out of hand. As things progressed, Valence and some of their associates organized a resistance against the envoys, and Brnine joined them because they didn't want to let Valence go off on their own and get hurt. Unfortunately, the resistance was considered a fringe isolationist group by Hassaleh culture at large, so they didn't have the numbers or power to prevent the Abyss's attack.
On the Nashira, the surviving members of the resistance were treated with greater respect by other survivors than they ever had been on planet, mostly because, well, they'd been right all along. For a time, Brnine was assigned engineering work on the ship, but when it became clear the Nashira was not going to permanently outrun the Abyss, they were reassigned to defense duties with the other members of the resistance. Brnine tried to stick to technical stuff, like repairing and reinforcing the ship, but thanks in part to Valence's influence, they found themself getting pulled into more and more strategy meetings. When the final battle took place, Brnine and Valence were separated, and Valence died before the last survivors managed to seal off the Abyss. In their last moments, Brnine was consumed with grief.
2) What, if anything, about their past life has echoes in their current life? Brnine is still a loner who works with their hands and, for the most part, tries to mind their own business. Unlike in their past life, however, they make it their mission to protect the kids - in this case, the teenage Nova Knights - even if it means everyone thinking they're cringe. They are also still very fond of earnest people, and still don't understand why.
3) What was their past life’s dying wish? Avenge them. Past them meant "avenge Valence"; current them interpreted it as "avenge the teens."
